Maroggia is believed to have been inhabited as far back as the Insubric period, but little evidence remains. The village grew up around the church, but later spread to the mountainous slopes across the Mara. It was home to many artists who worked in Italy including the Rodaris, sculptors and architects who worked on the Cathedral in Como. Interesting buildings in the village include the Parish Church of St. Peter and the Chapel-Sanctuary of the Madonna della Cintura. From Maroggia it is possible to go on several delightful excursions including walks to La Croce, to the Madonna del Castelletto (in Melano) and also to the villages of Arogno and Rovio.
