The Place du Pré de Foire was, from the 14th Century onwards, a regular market setting. In 1392, Countess Bonne de Bourbon, who was Regent of Savoy, granted Martigny the right to hold two annual fairs, each one to last for three days in June and October. From 1800 onwards, Martigny-Bourg was given the right to hold two other fairs, the December one being the Foire au lard (Bacon Fair). On 23 May 1831, the population erected a tree of liberty in the Place du Pré de Foire. The mob leaders were imprisoned and military rule was imposed in Martigny.
