Located about 8 km southwest of Lucerne, on the road through Kriens to Schwarzenberg, is the beautiful pilgrimage church at Hergiswald. Consecrated in 1662, it is the best known Loreto shrine in Switzerland and a fine example of early baroque religious architecture. The outstanding feature is the painted timber ceiling with more than 300 symbolic images of the Virgin dating from 1654. They are the work of Kaspar Meglinger, famous for his macabre paintings on the Spreuer bridge in Lucerne (see separate entry). Other interesting elements are the black Loreto Madonna, the steps, the shrine and the richly carved altar.
