Just north of Löwenplatz, the Löwendenkmal (Lion Monument) is one of the world’s most famous monuments. Carved out of natural rock, it commemorates the 26 officers and more than 700 troops of the Swiss Guard massacred in the Tuileries Palace in 1792, during the French Revolution. The sculpture is a huge figure of a mortally wounded lion, a broken spear embedded in his shoulder. Designed by Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1844), it was carved during 1820/21 by Lukas Ahorn (1789-1856) in the sandstone wall face of an old quarry. It is approximately 10 metres long by 6 metres high.
