Ligornetto is a pretty village near to Mendrisio and is the birthplace of two famous sculptors, Vincenzo Vela and Apollonio Pessina. The village lies on the roads from Stabio and Genestrerio and has been inhabited since Roman times. Mortuary vases and Roman coins have been found in the area. There are two interesting buildings worthy of a visit and these are the 13th Century Church of St. Laurence the Martyr and the 16th Century Church of St. Joseph. There two museums, both devoted to the village’s famous sons dealt with under separate entries: the Vela Museum and the Pessina Museum.
