Liestal, with a population of around 13,000, is the capital of the Basel-Country canton; it was first mentioned in 1189, but dates back to Roman times. Although an industrial town, it has the ‘Törli’and a pretty cobbled old town quarter around the Rathausgasse. Additional attractions to those detailed separately, include the Cantonal Museum at Zeughausplatz 28, which stages temporary exhibitions and the Police Museum at Rheinstrasse 25. Further swimming facilities include an open-air pool at Zunzgen and an indoor pool at Frenkendorf. Liestal is famous for its fiery Chienbäse parade which takes place on the Sunday night after Mardi Gras.
