Opened to the public in 1956, Lenzburg castle stands on a hill overlooking the town and is a popular tourist attraction. The oldest sections of the castle date back to the early 12th century and it is one of the most important in Switzerland. Built by the Counts of Lenzburg and subject to continuous expansion for 900 years, the castle includes a museum and children’s museum, the Habsburg Knights Hall and a charming French baroque rose garden. The poet Franz Wedekind and the polar explorer Lincoln Ellsworth both lived here. There are permanent and temporary exhibitions.
