During the Roman occupation Lausanne was called Lousonna and was located right next to the water. The Lausanne-Vidy Roman Museum estimates that the Gallo-Roman site was home to 1,500 to 2,000 residents, fishermen, craftsmen and merchants in the 1st century BC. The museum opened in 1993, encompassing the remains of a villa, with an atrium, painted rooms and rooms with heated floors. A permanent display shows daily life along the shores of Lake Geneva. The museum also includes an archaeological stroll through the remains of the forum.
