Lausanne Cathedral was constructed in the 13th century on the hill of the old City, and faces the city and Lake Geneva. Built using molasse, a soft stone sensitive to bad weather, it was built in several stages. Although started in 1170, the building was worked on until 1215. The painted doorway was added to the south façade in around 1225-1235. It was only in 1275 that the cathedral was consecrated, by both Emperor Rudolph of Hapsburg and Pope Gregory X. In 1536, during the Reformation, the cathedral underwent significant changes. The rose on the south gable of the transept is a masterpiece.
