The current church of Montheron is built on the remains of a 12th century abbey, destroyed in 1536 at the time of the Reformation, although some infrastructure remains. After the scandals which shook the Church in the 9th and 10th centuries, a return to a stricter rule was needed. Montheron followed the rule of Cluny. Archaeological research, conducted in 1911 then again in 1928-30 and 1975-76, provided enough information to be able to establish what the abbey of Montheron, installed on its current site since 1142, was like. The abbey is organized around the cloister, a square courtyard surrounded by covered galleries.
