At the beginning of the 19th century, romanticism discovered the Middle Ages. Gothic towers, dilapidated abbeys and other ruins were all the rage. In Lausanne, there were no ruins, so, in 1825, three friends organized a contest, the aim of which was the construction of a ruined tower. The winner was to be which of the three had built the best “factitious” ruin. Therefore three ‘ruins’ appeared, la tour Haldimand on the quai d’Ouchy, that of Mon-Repos, behind the Tribunal Fédéral, and that of Rovéréaz in the forest of the same name. The Haldimand tower won. The tower was entirely restored in 2004.
