The Swiss Reformation left Lucerne as the only major city in Switzerland to remain with traditional catholic beliefs and the Lucerne Jesuit Church was the first large baroque church built in Switzerland north of the Alps. It expressed the Catholic Church’s 17th century struggle to regain spiritual leadership in the counter-reformation. Under Father Christoph Vogler, construction work began in 1666 and the church was consecrated in 1677. It has an elegant Rococo interior which dates from 1750. The onion-topped twin towers were not completed until 1893. A major tourist attraction, the church also serves as a concert hall.
