Lucerne’s International Music Festival takes place from mid-August to early September each year and brings together world-class performers in impressive venues. These include the Kunsthaus, the Lion Monument, the Jesuit Church and other historical buildings. The Festival started in August 1938, in the gardens facing Richard Wagner’s villa in Tribschen, with an orchestra conducted by Arturo Toscanini. The Lucerne Festival Orchestra, under its conductor Claudio Abbado, was formed in 2003. The daily events include orchestral, choral, chamber and organ concerts, recitals, dance performances and film screenings. Lectures and exhibitions accompany the principal performances. See the website for full details.
