The Hôtel DuPeyrou was constructed during the period 1764 to 1771 for Pierre-Alexandre DuPeyrou, who was a great friend of Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Rousseau took refuge in Neuchâtel when it was under the rule of Frederick the Great of Prussia. The palace was once situated on the lakeshore, but the waters have since receded; the former greenhouse or orangery can be seen left of Ruelle DuPeyrou and the old outbuildings at the rear are still standing. Buildings which were once kitchens and stables today house the Gallery of History. There is a restaurant which opens from Tuesday to Saturday.
