The Murten History Museum, also known as the Morat Museum, is housed in a 1524 former mill close to the castle. It covers 6,000 years of regional history, since the first lacustrine habitations in the Neolithic Age. About 150 years ago, the lowered level of Lake Morat revealed fields of piles. Subsequent archaeological research now enables the museum to display well preserved exhibits, revealing the crafts and the lives of these ‘lake dwellers’. Another highlight is the 19th century diorama of the Battle of Murten (1476), when Charles the Bold of Burgundy was defeated, a defining moment in Swiss history.
