The Hans Erni Museum, opened in 1979, is located in the grounds of the Swiss Transport Museum, in a hexagonal building designed by the architect Jean-Marie Ellenberger. The renowned Swiss painter and sculptor Hans Erni was born in Lucerne in 1909 and has been described as the ‘Swiss Picasso’ and ‘one of the most important living artists of our time’. He is particularly well known for illustration of postage stamps, lithographs and his sports artwork, and the museum houses more than 300 of his works. The auditorium has become a popular conference venue watched over by Erni’s impressive two-part mural.
