Genestrerio is located in the fertile area of Mendrisio known as Campagnadorna. Although first documented in the 14th Century, archaeological evidence shows it was inhabited before the year 1000. The village was noted during the 16th Century for the quality of its masons, many of whom emigrated to Italy. Two families from the town were noted stucco workers, the Boffis and Calderaris, who worked on the cathedral at Fulda. Interesting buildings include the Parish Church of St. Antonio Abate, which was constructed in the 17th Century on the foundations of a 15th Century chapel.
