The Freiämter Strohmuseum in Wohlen, about 10.5 km southeast of Lenzburg, provides an insight to an industry which once made the town famous. Until around 1840, Wohlen had been a farming village and then straw weaving brought economic prosperity and, at one stage, employed 4,400 factory and about 24,000 home workers. The products, in particular the straw hats, impacted on Paris fashion and were worn by Hollywood stars. The hats went out of fashion in the middle of the 20th century, but the museum, which has a fascinating collection of straw ornaments and hats, recalls the industry’s heyday and retraces its history.
