The statue in Place du Marché, Montreux, by sculptor Irena Sedlecka, was erected as a tribute to Freddie Mercury. The statue is three metres high and overlooks Lake Geneva. It was unveiled on 25 November 1996 by Freddie’s father and Montserrat Caballé. Since 2003, fans from around the world have gathered to take part in the "Freddie Mercury Montreux Memorial Day". This festival takes place on the first weekend of September. Mercury, who lived in Montreux until his death from AIDS, was born Farrokh Bulsara on 5 September 1946. Zanzibar-born, he was best known as the lead singer and co-founder of the rock band Queen.
