Adjacent to the town hall in Meride there is a small but interesting Fossil Museum. Its exhibits refer to the region’s geological history, in particular that relating to nearby Monte San Giorgio. The museum looks back to 230 million years ago. Inaugurated in 1973, the museum features original fossil findings from the rich and important fauna of the middle Triassic period. These prestigious fossil findings have made Meride and Monte San Giorgio famous throughout the world. In 2003 Monte San Giorgio became part of the UNESCO World Heritage list.
