The dam at Emosson, situated at the col de la Gueulaz, was built between 1967 and 1975. It is the second largest dam in Switzerland. It is the starting point for many hiking excursions. It offers an amazing panoramic view over Mont Blanc. Water from the mountains is collected to feed the lake created by the dam. Its capacity is 225 million cubic metres of water. When it is full, the work submerges the old Barberine Dam, which was constructed in 1925. Visits to the dam at Emosson can be made free and without reservation during the tourist season of July and August.
