The site bearing dinosaur footprints in the small valley of Vieux-Emosson was discovered on August 23, 1976 by a French geologist. It is today one of the best known in Europe. More than 800 prints were discovered and they date back approximately 250 million years. The dinosaurs were believed to be primarily herbivores, with an average length of three to four metres and weighing from 300 to 400 kilos. The experts estimate that nine different species lived on the site. The site was declared a protected area in 1983 and it is strictly forbidden to damage the prints or to remove samples from the area.
