Since 1976 Lausanne has been the capital of L’Art Brut. The core of the collection comes from the “inventor” of the term Art Brut, the French artist, Jean Dubuffet. He was the first to recognize the worth of non-mainstream art, which he discovered in asylums and prisons. Mindful of the fact that it was in the French speaking part of Switzerland that he had encountered exceptional artists, he offered to Lausanne the 5,000 pieces from his collection. Works by Wölfli, Aloïse, Chaissac, Madge Gill, Carlo, Augustin and Lesage are housed at the Château de Beaulieu, an 18th century mansion.
