Châtelard-Frontière began primarily as a passage for vehicles on the international route to Forclaz. It is now an attractive destination in its own right, with restaurants, souvenir shops and hotels. As a doorway into Valais, Châtelard-Frontière came into being in the 19th Century. Previously, the place was used as a fortified defence, used to close the border with France in the event of uprisings or epidemics. In 1840, because so many travellers now used the route, two hotels were built. The railway station, designed to be the international halt of the Martigny-Chamonix line, has preserved its historic cachet.
