The Château St Maire was originally constructed between 1397 and 1427 as a residence (and fortress) for the bishops of Lausanne. Although heavily fortified, it was captured by the Bernese invaders, who then used the château as a residence for their bailiffs. It is an imposing cube-shaped structure, with the base built from stone and the upper structure of brick. Located in the old town, this impressive castle is today used as the administrative headquarters of the local government of Vaud.
