The Château de La Bâtiaz is a magnificent 13th Century medieval castle. The name Bâtiaz comes from the Latin word “bastida”, which means fortress and this castle was designed entirely for a military purpose. Its aim was to defend and protect the region and there is little in the way of comfort. The entry, laid out above cliffs of Dranse, was by a masonry ramp. The angle of the door facilitated its defence. The windows rare and are intended only for protection. There are lots of torture instruments on display and there is a medieval tavern on site.
