The Chiesa Rossa (Red Church) is located to the east of Ponte, part of the village of Castel San Pietro. It is a 14th Century national historical monument set on a rocky spur above the river Breggia. The church is dedicated to Saint Pietro and was given the name Chiesa Rossa after it was painted red according to the instructions of the bishop of Como in 1599. The church was built by Bonifacio da Modena, Bishop of Como, in 1343. Outside the church, set in the wall, is a white marble bass-relief portrait of the bishop.
