About 8 km northwest of Payerne, in Estavayer-le-Lac, is the splendid Chenaux Castle, often referred to simply as the Estavayer-le-Lac castle. Although only one of the original towers remains, the current pigeonnier, it has plenty of added turrets and other embellishments to compensate. Construction started in the 13th century and the castle was acquired by Humbert, the bastard of Savoie, who continued the building process. Set on fire during the Burgundian Wars, it has been partially rebuilt and restored on several occasions. Although now occupied by the prefecture, you can wander through the grounds and courtyards and admire its interesting construction
