The covered Chapel Bridge crosses the Reuss River diagonally and is Europe’s oldest wooden bridge, having been built in 1333 as part of the city fortifications. Still in pedestrian use today, it is 204 metres long and one of Lucerne’s great attractions. More than a hundred 17th century paintings are suspended from the rafters and depict scenes of Swiss and local history, as well as the city’s patron saints St. Leodegar and St. Maurice. Much of the bridge and some of the paintings were destroyed in a fire in 1993. The bridge has been faithfully restored and the lost paintings accurately replicated.
