The Castle of Montagny-les-Monts was once an important asset in the feudal system of Vaud and played a major role during many centuries of political unrest. The lords of Montagny ruled the region for two centuries, but were expelled from their castle when the area was wrested from Vaud and taken over by Fribourg. In 1478 a Fribourg bailiff took control of the castle and surrounding land. Due to poor maintenance, the rooms fell into ruins and today there is only the single donjon (castle tower) left as a reminder of the splendour of days gone by.
