During the 13th century, the Milanese family of Visconti built a castle on the shores of Lake Maggiore. The fortress had its own private port, heavily fortified walls and guard towers. The palace was used as a garrison and gave the family prestige and power. The Visconti left the region in 1513 and their successors, the bailiffs of the confederation, ruled for the next 300 years. The castle was destroyed and rebuilt many times, but it was always the centre of city life. In 1803, when Ticino became part of the Swiss confederation, the castle then belonged to the Ticino Canton.
