Capolago lies on the shores of Lake Lugano, under the slopes of Monte Generoso. Originally a fishing village, Capolago grew when the lake port was transferred from Riva San Vitale. There used to be a castle, but it was destroyed by the Swiss in 1517. The great architect, Carlo Maderni, who drew the final plans for St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican came from Capolago. The 14th Century Church of St. Mary Magdalene and the Chapel of the Madonna of Lourdes are both worth visiting. A point of special interest is the railway up to the peak of Monte Generoso.
