There are few panorama paintings left in the world and the Bourbaki Panorama building, which was fully renovated in 2000, displays the impressive 1881 circular painting by Swiss painter Edouard Castres (1838-1902). The 10 metre high by 114 metre circumference painting depicts a scene from the Franco/Prussian War of 1870/71, when France’s Eastern Army, under the command of General Bourbaki, crossed the Swiss border and gave up its arms. Castres took part as a Red Cross volunteer accompanying this army. The panorama, originally 14 metres high, was displayed in Geneva, but was moved to Lucerne in 1889. Sound effects add to the interest.
