Just a four minute drive to the east of Interlaken, the lovely resort of Bönigen dates back to 1239. It is famous for its unique, ornately painted, carved houses decorated with wood carvings, some going back to the 16th century. With its mountain backdrop and its meadows stretched out along Lake Brienz, where steamers glide by, the lakeside walks are one of the great attractions and offer complete relaxation. The resort has a village museum, used extensively for local artists to display their work, with rooms dating from 1800-1880 and there is an attractive lakeside lido (see separate entry).
