Bissone, situated only 8 km from Lugano, was already documented in the 8th Century. It developed as a fishing village, but is the birthplace of famous names such as Gaggini, Caratti, Orsatti, Castelli, Allio, Garovo, Tencalla, Bussi, Porro, Maderno, Verda, Somaini, Comanedi, Pario, Bono and Francesco Borromini. Bissone has some remarkable religious buildings including the Church of St. Carpoforo (see separate entry), the 17th Century Church of St. Rocco, quaint narrow streets and elegant façades dating back to the 16th , 17th and 18th centuries around the lakeside square.
