Aarburg is a picturesque little town with a population of around 6,500, located some 6 km south of Olten above the junction of the Aare and Wigger rivers. The town is dominated by the Arburg Fortress and church, situated on a rock spur; the fortress is one of the largest castles in Switzerland and is a heritage site of national significance. It was originally built in the early 12th century and is now a youth centre; tours are offered on Saturdays at 2 pm. The local history museum has among its exhibits a model of the old part of town.
