A cave and bones were discovered by children in 1990 in the village of Zillis-Reichen, located approximately 33 km south of Chur and justly famous for its St Martin’s Church (see separate entry). The cave is about 400 metres south of the church, below the Hasenstein castle ruins, and is thought to have been a resting place for travellers since the Stone Age and used for burial in the 5th to 7th centuries. Subsequent excavations uncovered some 550 Roman coins from the 3rd and 4th century, silver rings, earrings and plates, rock crystals, human and animal bones, fireplaces and remains of fires.
