The statue of William Tell, the legendary Swiss hero, stands in front of the early 19th century town hall and a tower from the Middle Ages. It was created by Richard Kissling and inaugurated on the 28th of August in 1895 and portrays Tell holding his crossbow, with his son, in front of a Swiss alpine scene. Inscribed on the base is the date of 1307, when the famed event is said to have taken place. Immortalized in a drama by the German writer Friedrich von Schiller (1759-1805), William Tell is still, to the Swiss, a symbol of rebellion against arbitrary rule.
