Bürglen, approximately 2 km southeast of Altdorf, is considered to have been the birthplace of the national hero William Tell and, as well as the museum (see separate entry), has the historically important Tell Chapel. This was erected in 1582 by Peter Gisler and Johann Scherer on, it is said, the exact spot of Tell’s house. Restoration works in 1949 revealed that the chapel was richly decorated with frescos by Heinrich Gessner. Inside the chapel, the story of Tell is told by an ancient tableau cycle and above the altar an unusual clock reminds Swiss people to remain unified
