Located 2.5 km southeast of Baden, the Wettingen Monastery is in the bend of the Limmat River and has, since 1976, been the Wettingen Canton School, having previously been the Teacher Training College since 1848. The monastery was founded in 1227, as the Maris Stella Monastery, by donation from Baron Heinrich II of Rapperswil and is the best preserved Cistercian monastery in Switzerland. In 1841 the cantonal parliament of Aargau dissolved all monasteries. Features in the church are the richly carved choir stalls and the 13th-17th century stained glass windows in the Romano-Gothic cloister. Extensive renovations took place in the 1980/90s.
