Opening in October 2008, the Westside Centre, positioned over the E 25 highway and an S-Bahn station, is a gateway to Berne from the west and a new city landmark. It was designed by the internationally renowned, Polish born, American architect Daniel Libeskind (b.1946), who in 2003 became the master plan architect for the reconstruction of the World Trade Center site in Lower Manhattan. The multi-use facility of some 1.5 million square feet incorporates 55 shops, 10 restaurants and bars, a hotel, a multiplex cinema, a health centre and housing; its powerful architecture sets a new standard for shopping, entertainment and living.
