The Wartenberg, overlooking Muttenz and some 7 km southwest of Basel, is known to have been inhabited as early as 1800-800 BC and in the period 50 BC - 260 AD, the Romans built watchtowers there. The first Wartenberg citadel is believed to have been built in the 9th century and the other two in the 12th century; they were all severely damaged in the 1356 earthquake and progressively fell into ruin. During World War II, the citadels were fortified and the artefacts discovered during excavations can be seen in the Liestal cantonal museum. Some restoration work took place in 1955/56.
