Located to the north of the Käfigturm Prison tower (see separate entry) is the spacious Waisenhausplatz, part of which is pedestrianised. At the north end is the splendid old Orphanage (Waisenhaus), after which the square gets its name; it dates from 1782 and is now the Basel Police Headquarters. In front of this building is the imposing Oppenheim Fountain (see separate entry) and whilst in the area notice the 1786 Louis XV fountain outside the Käfigturm. Men can be seen playing chess in the square and the well known Christmas market is held here.
