The late-Gothic Carthusian Monastery, built in the early 1400s, has been used as the Civic Waisenhaus (Orphanage) since 1669 and has a number of historical areas which are open to the public. Areas which can be visited include the church, built in the period 1408-1416, and the cloisters, which have some notable frescos. Also open are the former Refectory; the Kartäusersaal, which was formed from monk’s cells; the Layman Refectory and the distinctive Zschekkenbürlin-room. The Powder Tower served the monks as a monastery prison and the 1677 Caritas fountain is another attractive feature.
