From the village of Trin, located approximately 6 kms east of Flims, there is a hiking trail which goes right into the Vorderrhein Gorge. This ravine is often referred to as the Grand Canyon of the Alps or the Swiss Grand Canyon. Some 10,000 years ago, the Flims landslide dammed the Rhine with an estimated 15 billion cubic metres of rock and mud, which slid into the valley. Since then the Rhine has carved its way back through, creating a spectacular gorge. The river is much loved and used by river rafting enthusiasts and continues to fascinate hikers.
