Voltaire described his estate, Les Délices, which he owned from 1755 until 1765, as the palace of a philosopher with the gardens of Epicurus. Since 1954, his former mansion has housed an important centre of documentation and research on Voltaire and the 18th century. The building now consists of a library and a museum. The collections are composed essentially of printed books (currently 24,000), manuscripts and iconographical documents. The gardens, which Voltaire loved so deeply, are still immaculately cared for and a delight for visitors to stroll through.
