Located about 29 km southwest of Chur and about 5 km south of Thusis, the spectacular Via Mala Gorge is the largest in the Graubunden canton. This is the path that Goethe travelled on his way to Italy in May 1788 and the gorge route is open from April to October. You descend many steps into the gorge; there is an exciting bridge, a tunnel and a viewing platform. The gorge was formed by the Hinterrhein River, a headstream of the Rhine and is, in parts, only a few metres wide, with walls up to 300 metres high.
