Vacallo is located north of Chiasso and has been inhabited since at least as far back as the 16th Century, but possibly longer. Many of the old houses are rustic in style. The village was the birthplace of sculptors Pietro and Giuseppe Lironi. Many buildings are worthy of visiting, including the 17th Century Church of St. Croce and the Church of St. Simon and St. Judas from the same era, but built on 15th Century foundations. Two patrician houses are particularly worthy of note as they belonged to the musicians Puccini and Leoncavallo.
