The village of Untervaz, some 11 km northeast of Chur, has a population of about 2,300 and is at an altitude of 564 metres. First documented as Uaze in the 9th century, it lies west of the River Rhine at the foot of the Calanda Mountains and the Haldensteiner summit of 2,860 metres. Apart from the Neuberg Castle Ruins (see separate entry) there are two other ruined castles; the remains of the 13th century Rappenstein Castle, built in a rock crevice in Valcosenz to the west, and Friewis, the baths which had medicinal properties.
