The University of Fribourg was founded in 1889 by Georges Python and is located to the west of the square that bears his name; its buildings are spread around Fribourg. The University can trace its origins to the foundation of the Jesuit Seminary of St Michel in 1580. The Misericorde Campus was erected in the period 1939-1942 and was designed by the architects Honegger and Dumas, who were students of the celebrated Swiss architect Le Corbusier. The campus has an art collection, a museum of natural history and ethnography and the great hall is decorated with 17th century tapestry.
